In memory of Kyle Dempster
The Alpinist, Issue 56
Kyle truly was the raddest dude. The words I wrote could never capture what he meant to me and so many others.
SILENCE, CURIOSITY, EXPLORATION, AND HOPE
A personal piece I wrote by invitation from the Friends of Cedar Mesa to celebrate the proclamation of Bears Ears National Monument.
PACK LIKE A PRO: ULTRALIGHT BACKPACKING
OSPREY PACKS
A chance to highlight my experience and maniacal 15-year pursuit to find better and easier ways to do all things backpacking. An issue fraught with opinionated danger and difficult to discuss.
WILD OWYHEE
OSPREY PACKS - KEEN - IBEX
Developed story-arc in two days for a multi-brand campaign to protect the Owyhee ecosystem for KEEN, Ibex and Osprey. Developed web and social messaging to support conservation campaign.
“In the heart of the west lives a vast, untouched and priceless gem. The Owyhee. A wild place where those who visit leave with something more than they arrived with, whether a connection to a simpler time, youthful memories reignited, or a source of hope and strength. It has been here as long as time, raw and perfect, but its uncertain future now lies in our hands.“
THE GOOD DAYS ARE MADE CAMPAIGN
OSPREY PACKS
Worked with the other two members of Osprey’s Creative Team to develop campaign concept integrated with brand/e-commerce/social intiatives, video storyboarding, scripting, location scouting. Personally acted as talent and production assistant, crafted video titles, descriptions, etc.
”There are many recipes for making the good days: a few friends, distant hot springs, an armada of floaties and coffee. Join us as we roam the trails of New Mexico, explore hidden nooks and crannies, do a little splish-splashing, and make a few good days of our own.“

WHEN MOUNTAINS SPEAK
OSPREY PACKS
Writing from the perspective of a mountain (the last two lines are not my own).
MARCUS GARCIA DESERT TOWER CLIMB
OSPREY PACKS
After mobbing through miles of mud one can only find in the desert and leaving my Subaru to fend for itself, we arrived at a remote desert tower between Moab and Indian Creek.
Marcus forgot his climbing shoes, so he wore mine, and I wore our photographer’s. Both were two sizes too large for us. Good thing we were doing the second ascent of a 5.12 route…
The climbing was varied, exciting and raw. Many small rocks fell. Some large rocks fell, quite close to my belay (on my pack).
Marcus is an incredible individual, and it was a pleasure to share pitches with him on such a special route.
THE GREAT WHITE ICICLE
OSPREY PACKS
Contemplate driving to Outdoor Retailer with workmates.
Abandon workmates to climb a few pitches in Ouray before Outdoor Retailer.
Climb said pitches.
Drive to Salt Lake City.
Arrive sometime after 6 p.m.
Have dinner with brother.
Fall asleep too late after one too many beers.
Get up at 3 a.m. and knock out a four pitch ice route, in the rain, before anyone else is out of bed.
Fall over many times on the easy descent.
Show up at the Salt Palace only to find out everyone sucks and setup won’t start until 1 p.m.
